Golf clubs that are too long or short are a big no for me. I don’t have the time and the energy to make compensations in my swing. And I don’t want to strain in a game that should be supposedly fun in be first place.
I want to get the in the golf course and have the best time of my life, and that starts by making sure I have the right size of golf club. But how to tell if your golf clubs are too long?
You aren’t any different.
So if you want to get the most out of the game, you need to invest in a club of the right length. In this guide, we help you know how to tell if gold club are too long, and what you can do about it.
3 Ways How to Tell If Your Golf Clubs Are Too Long
I have never understood why some gofers engage with extremely long clubs only until they become unbearable. But there is no sense in choosing a club that’s unnecessarily too long for you when you shouldn’t do that in the first place.
Here’s the deal:
The length of a golf club matters 100%. Choose the wrong length and you’ll cripple your gameplay from the beginning. Go for the right length and you’re on your way to getting the most out of every swing and possibly even scoring higher.

With that said, here are easy ways to tell if the golf club that you currently have is too big.
1. You Develop An Unusual Posture
There’s no doubt that the length of the golf club is going to affect your posture and rightly so in a bad way. If anything, instead of taking your usual posture, you will find yourself standing up right because you don’t have full control over the club.
You’re highly likely to lose balance when you stand in an upright position because your body’s weight head straight to your heels, which is not appropriate for golf. In the end,
you experience the difficulty in maintaining proper golf swing, which is, of course, detrimental to your gameplay.

2. The Club Feels Too Cumbersome To Manage
If a golf club feels too heavy to manage, there’s a high chance that it’s inappropriately long for your height. You’re unable to swing your golf well, which means you’ll definitely lose your distance because the head cannot get close to the ball in a proper stance.
If anything, you find yourself consistently hitting with the toe, which is the reason why you aren’t getting the appropriate distance required to land a shot. The result is bad golfing experience that ultimately affects your overall score.
3. Improper, Odd Golf Ball Flight
If you hit the golf ball with a club that’s too long, it will fly a bit too high and to the far left. In this case, your standard swings simply can’t end up where they should, an indication that you should switch your club to one with a proper length.
In addition to the unusual ball flight, you’ll also experience improper golf swing because you’re struggling with a longer golf club that makes it hard for a player of your height to perform the right swinging technique.

How Do I Know A Golf Club Is Too Short?
I feel like it’s not enough to tell if a golf club is too long. You also need to know if it’s too short so you don’t keep using a club that will make your golfing worse as if you’re in some sort of a slump already.
And it isn’t rocket science to tell if your golf club is too short. Quite too often, you will notice that:
- Your golf ball ends up going to the right instead of in the intended direction
- You get an incredibly fast tempo
- You bend over to the extreme more than you should
- Your swing path is unusual, mostly in and out
How Long Should A Golf Shaft Be?
A golf club should be long enough to get you to play comfortably from start to finish. So make sure you choose one with the right length depending on your height.
Below is a table showing a golfer’s height and the corresponding golf club length.
Golfer Height (In Feet) | Golf Club Length |
5 -5.9 | Standard length |
5.10 – 6.2 | +½ inch to the standard length |
6.3 – 6.5 | +1 inch to the standard length |
6.5 | +1 ½ inches to the standard length |
6.6+ | +2 inches to the standard length |
Looking at the table above, it’s clear that golfers who player with longer clubs are often shorter than 5 feet 6 inches. It’s clear that the standard club is a bit too long.
The best thing to do if you fall outside the 5 feet and 5 feet 9 inches height bracket is to get a golf club that’s an inch short. The same case applies if your height falls between 5 feet 1 inch and 5 feet 4 inches.
If you are 5 feet tall or less, you should go for a golf club an inch less the length of the standard one.

2 Things To Do If Your Golf Clubs Are Too Long
There’s no better way to deal with a long golf club than not buying one in the first place. But if you’ve realized that you already have one of an insane length than what you’ll get used to, either adjust its length or get a new golf club altogether.
Buy a New Golf Club
Order a new custom golf club of the right height. There are many custom golf clubs made to the proper length although they can be somewhat expensive if you buy one instead of a complete set.
If you’re short, look for teen sets because they have shorter shafts that make them suitable for players in your category. Teen sets are available as a complete option, which means they include all the clubs included in a golf bag.
Adjust the Length of the Club
You don’t have to buy a new club if you can work your way around golf club fitting. Take note of the proper length and then adjust the shaft accordingly. To be clear, shortening the shaft will dramatically reduce the weight of the club and affect its flexibility.
Take your club to a fitting shop near you and have a fitter do the work for you. They’ll trim the length of the shaft down to the right size without interfering with the specs and parameters of the club.
